Commodity Spice Expressive Review: My New Favourite Evening Fragrance
There are certain fragrances I naturally gravitate towards for particular occasions, and Commodity Spice (Expressive) has quickly become one of my favourites for evenings out. I've been wearing it quite a lot recently, particularly for events and dinners in London. Considering how many fragrances I have in my collection, that's quite a compliment. It's warm, spicy, slightly sweet and wonderfully sophisticated. Exactly what I look for in an evening fragrance.
The Scent
Commodity Spice Expressive is a beautifully balanced spicy gourmand fragrance built around saffron, allspice and cinnamon sugar.
The opening has a wonderful aromatic warmth, with saffron and spices creating an immediate richness. As it develops, cinnamon sugar and a creamy condensed milk accord introduce a softer sweetness, before tonka bean and sandalwood provide a smooth, comforting finish.
What I particularly enjoy is that it's sweet without becoming sickly and spicy without feeling overpowering.
Why It's Become My Evening Fragrance
Getting ready for an event usually involves choosing an outfit, a watch and, of course, a fragrance. Recently, Spice has been my automatic choice. There's something about its combination of warming spices and creamy sweetness that works beautifully with evening tailoring. It feels luxurious without being overly formal, and distinctive without trying too hard.
For me, it's particularly well suited to autumn and winter, although I'll happily wear it throughout the year for evening occasions.
If You Like Commodity Spice Expressive, Try These Three
1. Akro East
One of the best fragrances I've smelt in a very long time. Raspberry, Oud Assafi and leather create something considerably darker than Commodity Spice, but with a similarly addictive richness. Perfect if you want to explore oud and leather.
2. Penhaligon's Cairo
A beautifully rich combination of saffron, rose, vanilla and patchouli. Cairo shares that wonderful spicy warmth but takes it in a more floral, opulent direction. An excellent choice for someone who enjoys sophisticated oriental fragrances.
3. Amouage Boundless
Cardamom, ginger, vanilla, tobacco and cocoa create a wonderfully complex fragrance. Less creamy than Spice Expressive, but equally appealing if you love warm spices, sweetness and woody depth.
Final Thoughts
It's warm, inviting, sophisticated and incredibly enjoyable to wear. For anyone looking to explore spicy fragrances, this is a fantastic place to start.
