AKRO EAST Review: The Oud Fragrance That Completely Changed My Opinion of the Brand

Every so often, a fragrance comes along that genuinely surprises me. Not because it's particularly expensive, difficult to find or surrounded by hype, but simply because it smells incredible. Akro East is one of those fragrances.

I've been collecting fragrances for years, and the more you discover, the harder it becomes to find something that genuinely stops you in your tracks. But East has done exactly that. In fact, I'd go as far as saying it's one of the best fragrances I've smelt in a very long time. What's particularly interesting is that it's completely changed my perspective on Akro as a fragrance house. It's made me want to go back, explore the collection properly and perhaps reconsider a few fragrances I might previously have overlooked.

And that's something I love about collecting fragrances. Just when you think you know a brand, something comes along and changes your mind.

The Scent

Akro East is an Extrait de Parfum built around three distinctive elements: raspberry, oud and leather, with Ambrox providing the foundation.

Top Note: Raspberry

The opening immediately sets East apart from many traditional oud fragrances. Raspberry introduces a rich, fruity sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the darker notes underneath. It's an unexpected opening for something so heavily influenced by the Middle East, but it works incredibly well.

Rather than making the fragrance feel overly sweet, the raspberry provides a brightness that makes the transition into the oud and leather particularly interesting.

Heart Notes: Oud Assafi and Leather

This is where East really comes into its own.

Oud Assafi sits at the centre of the fragrance, bringing the depth, richness and distinctive character that oud lovers will immediately appreciate. Alongside it, leather introduces another dimension. The combination feels dark, warm and incredibly sophisticated, with the raspberry providing just enough contrast to prevent the composition from becoming too heavy.

Base Note: Ambrox

Ambrox provides a warm, smooth foundation, helping to bring the composition together.

As East develops, the contrast between the sweetness and darker woody leather character becomes increasingly appealing. It's a fragrance with real presence, but what interests me most is how those individual elements work together rather than competing for attention.

A Fragrance Inspired by Travel

One of the most interesting things about East is the inspiration behind it. Akro describes East as its addictive travel fragrance, created around the idea that our sense of smell has an extraordinary ability to transport us somewhere else. I couldn't agree more. A particular fragrance can remind you of a hotel, a holiday, a city or even a moment in your life that you'd almost forgotten about. Sometimes it takes just one familiar smell to bring everything back.

For East, that inspiration comes from the Middle East, particularly the rich aromas of oud, the grand desert landscapes and the energy of traditional street markets.

Oud itself comes from the Aquilaria tree and has long been associated with Middle Eastern fragrance culture. It's an ingredient that can take on many different characteristics depending on how it's used, from dark and smoky to smooth, woody and luxurious.

What I appreciate about AKRO EAST is that it doesn't simply rely on oud to create an impression. The addition of raspberry and leather gives the fragrance its own personality, making it feel contemporary while retaining that unmistakable richness.

The Fragrance That Changed My Perspective on AKRO

This is probably the most important part of the review for me. I've tried an enormous number of fragrances over the years, from established designer houses to some of the most exclusive niche perfumers. And naturally, you develop favourites, preferences and even opinions about certain brands. Sometimes those opinions stick. But East has reminded me why it's important to approach every fragrance with an open mind.

I genuinely wasn't expecting to love this fragrance as much as I do.

It's rich, distinctive and beautifully composed. More importantly, it's made me curious about the rest of the Akro collection.

If you're a fragrance collector, an oud enthusiast or simply someone looking for something genuinely different, AKRO EAST deserves to be on your radar.
