THE SUN IN SPLENDOUR | NO THRILLS PUB FOOD IN NOTTING HILL

You can't miss this yellow lighthouse on the corner. In the summer it's totemic. I asked for a menu through the window, and a couple handed it to me. They have bangers and mash, fish and chips, sold.

Inside the bar is as expected. Parquet flooring a mic of low and high tables. There is enough staff to make you feel wanted. The fish and chips and bangers and mash were a delight. British Outdoor-Bred Cumberland Sausage and Mash, Crispy spiced onions, red wine gravy. Beer-Battered Atlantic Haddock and Chips, Minted crushed peas, tartare sauce. They've got 9 hand-picked beers in their collection. They'll be on rotation daily. Still I went for The London Pride as always.

It's the kind of stop off you dream of. There's no dress up, there's no pretense. Yes you will want better dinners and burgers in the future, but for a casual drop in drop out lunch meal and a livener, this was just the tonic.

The outdoor garden is cutesy, and like every pub that procrastinates to have a secret beer garden, it's really just an exposed extra 10 square feet of concrete on the way to the bogs.

Things to do nearby. You're in Notting Hill so check out the markets. The locations from the Notting Hill film are well publicised and you can get an idea of those locations on my friends blog here.

The best thing to do around Notting Hill is to get lost and try the vintage markets. Kensington Palace is within earshot, The Leighton House is special and a few bus stops away, and the Design Museum is right next door. For local exhibitions check the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea and walk the infamous King's Road.

Freddie Mercury's house is around there somewhere, he called it his country home in the city. How the other half live.
