The Lamb in Chiswick | Restaurant Review

There is no natural light in The Lamb in Chiswick. Hence the photos are dark. However, for first dates, a little intimate lighting by the fireplace could be the ticket.

It only has a couple of beers on draught. I took a Prime Time IPA, a light and zingy pale ale with a dense and satisfying nose – perfectly balanced on the palate. My good lady a large glass of Donatien Bahuaud N7 Sancerre. Which apparently, was average.

For lunch I chose the Lamb Rump in Red wine gravy. The wife has a distinct aversion to Sunday Roasts and ordered the Pan-Roasted Fillet of Cod Potato rosti chips, sautéed leeks & peas, lemon, caper & parsley sauce.

The lamb was fantastic, though Roger was the beneficiary of all the fat and crackling. The carrots were cooked through and marinated in something sumptuous. Gravy drippings probably. The kale and greens were cheap and undesirable. The wife loved the cod and shared my sentiment on the greens.

'Everything alright?' a young girl arrived and collected the plates.

'Everything but the greens,' I said.

'I'll let the chef know.'

'Please don't, I'd rather not upset him on a Sunday especially.'

'He's used to it.'

I settle up. The girl behind the bar, a different young girl with some of the best enunciation I've heard in a long time, took payment and wished me a pleasant day. She's wasted here, but the pub is certainly the better for having her.

The atmosphere is subdued, with the main activity happening outside in the forecourt. Kids running around, occasionally. There is an efficiency, an affability to it all. I'm not sure if we'll be back. The choice of beers are somewhat limited compared to the Old Packhorse across the street. The food is just below par of The Hound, the service better than The Roebuck, but that is a very low bar.

But it's contained, family friendly, dog friendly, and the chef has a tough skin.
