The Art of Layering: Elevating Your Outfits for All Seasons

Layering men's clothes can create stylish and versatile outfits. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Start with a Base Layer: Begin with a fitted base layer like a plain T-shirt or a lightweight sweater. Anything logo heavy will make the look too fussy. A simple tee will also provide a comfortable foundation for additional layers. I always try and match the base layer with my eye colour especially if it's a crew neck tee as it helps promotes the eyes and coordinates the look.

2. Mix Textures:
Combine different textures and fabrics for visual interest. If you start to pair too much of one with the other it can begin to look like loungewear or you just stepped out to walk the dog in your pyjamas. Pair chunky knits with smoother materials or denim with a softer fabric.

3. Consider Proportions: Layer shorter pieces over longer ones for a balanced look. I'd still recommend tucking in the base layer into your trousers, or doing half and half with a base shirt. The ore layers that spill out the messier it can become. A longer shirt under a shorter jacket can create a well-proportioned outfit.

4. Play with Patterns and Colours:
Experiment with patterns and colours, but keep a cohesive colour palette to avoid looking like a car wreck in a paintball car park. Maybe familiarising yourself with some colour wheel. Colours for Men by Carole Jackson is the bible for this topic.

5. Add a Middle Layer: Incorporate a middle layer like a cardigan, flannel shirt, or light jacket. This layer can be easily removed if the temperature changes. If you look at recent offerings from Hackett for how to wear a hoody with a blazer for example. I think these kinds of layering’s are very practical especially in the U.K where you can get 4 seasons in one day.

6. Outerwear: Top off the layers with a suitable outerwear piece, such as a coat or a jacket. Make sure it complements the rest of the outfit. You may have seen on a lot previous posts I've always opted for a long camel overcoat which has a great function and neutrality to it. Paired with suede tan books, black jeans and you can take your pick from earthy hues for anything underneath.

7. Accessories: Use accessories like scarves, hats, or even a statement watch to enhance the overall look. I've really gotten into my hats recently as you may have seen from my holiday snaps. However, when layering accessories I have a mania for it. Hence starting my own unisex jewellery business, Dion Dreyes

8. Fit Matters: Ensure that each layer fits well. Avoid overly baggy or tight layers that might create an unflattering silhouette. No matter how well coordinated the look is, if the fit is off, then it will just look a shambles and undo your hard work. If you're looking to take your wardrobe seriously, then get friendly with your local dry cleaner who should also offer repairs and alterations.

9. Make every garment as breathable as possible. I would avoid using any waterproof raincoats if you're doing many layers as your body heat has nowhere to go. Help it circumvent by using breathable fabrics such as linen, mesh cotton, hopsack blazers, basket weave shirts etc.

10. Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations. Layering is a chance to showcase your personal style. But do double check peoples feedback as to your choices. Whilst it may be good to express your creative flair, your personal tastes can be G*d awful. And if you don't know the rules to begin with, you won't necessarily know how to break them.

Remember, layering is about both functionality and style. Consider the weather and the occasion while layering your outfit.
