This 2023 Season Top 5 Must Have Trench Coats Made in the UK

Today I would love to talk to you about this seasons must have trench coats for 2023. Where did the Trench Coat come from originally I hear you cry through your Smart Phone?

Well according to the wonderful book, FASHIONPEDIA, the Trench Coat was originally invented by the British for military purposes. It was introduced to the public post World War 1 and was subsequently revolutionised by the founder of Burberry, Thomas Burberry. He developed Gabardine, a wool material which is rip-resistant virtually crease proof and processed chemically to be water repellent.

Later you'd see these coats become synonymous with iconic actors wearing them in cult films such as Get Carter, Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Coronation Street's Jack P. Shepherd, although only in his personal life.

I'm in the mood to add a Trench Coat to my Spring 2023 collection and wanted to share with you some of the ones that have made it to my Wishlist.

BURBERRY Mid-length Kensington Heritage Trench Coat  £1,790

Let's start with the Daddy-Mac. The Burberry mid-length Kensington Trench coat available in honey, coal or black. I've gone for honey because it contrasts well with my skin tone, and I like it in my morning coffee and on my gluten free bagels. Most of all it's Made in England, and with all that's going on in the world right now, I think this is something to be championed.

PRIVATE WHITE V.C Belted Melton Wool Trench Coat £1,250

Private White V.C.'s coat is inspired by traditional despatch rider trench styles worn by the British military before WWII. It's been handmade in the U.K (love that) and features an oversized wing collar, storm flap and an asymmetric document pocket.

I love that word, asymmetric. Great name for a boy band that's made up of at lest 3-4 different ethnicities. It fastens with locally-made horn buttons and a tonal belt with a leather buckle.

CORDINGS NAVY BRITISH WARM OVERCOAT £595

Often associated with Winston Churchill who favoured it for its practicality and effortless style it has remained popular ever since as a smart urban overcoat. Sadly this Cordings' interpretation does not come with any free cigars.

Cordings version however, has the immaculate attention to detailing you would expect. Tailored in a weighty 27oz British Melton, it has the hallmark leather football buttons and epaulettes that make the style so distinctive. Made in Yorkshire!

Mackintosh Oxford Bonded Cotton Trench Coat £995

A very streamlined interpretation of the Trench Coat. If you're looking for a truly classic trench, look no further than Mackintosh. This coat has been handmade in Scotland from the brand's signature water-repellent bonded cotton to keep you protected from showers.

I also dig how the model has worn it in the photo here. He has bookended the look with some black/blue derby's and contrasted both the coat and the shoes with some white slacks.

It has a buttoned throat latch and covered placket for a streamlined finish, while inside there's a tab so you can attach one of the label's interchangeable liners. How many is that now 4? Have I hit my SEO-friendly word count yet? Ok one more, jeez.

Burberry Reversible Nylon Trench Coat £1,890

Ok yes I already highlighted one Burberry Trench Coat already, but it's not easy finding too many UK brands that make these. And this one especially caught my eye because it's reversible. Meaning if a stray dog in the park comes up and jumps his muddy paws all over your beautiful Trench Coat, you can simply save face by slipping it inside out, before exchanging details with the owner as they'll still need to cough up for the dry cleaning.
