Why have I only Just discovered the Importance of Water Filtration

'I only drink bottled water, or water from the filter, so I'm all good.' If you say this to yourself, especially if you have a steam shower in your summer house, then you might be in deeper sh*t than you might think.

First off, the bottled plastic water has a journey that is not documented in the slightest. It might contain the filtered water from the slopes of Matterhorn, but then how was it transported to your shelve? How long was it cooking in the un-airconditioned warehouse or sitting in the driver's truck for hours clearing customs at Calais?

Would you drink water from a plastic bottle that you know has been cooking in your car for the past week? Same difference. But what about the other unfiltered water that makes its way into your house? The shower, the bathroom, the jacuzzi for crying out loud?

Sure, everyone is meticulous about what the water they put in their mouth. It has to be filtered, boiled, fresh from the geysers of Mount Fuji. But what about a steam shower, you're inhaling all the steam? Isn't the skin supposed to be the largest organ in the human body? Surely we're just one big pore sucking in all this unfiltered tap water. We're like a giant sponge. What will be the long term effects of this?

All the contaminants like chlorine and forever chemicals are toxins your body is incapable of breaking down. That's why they call them forever chemicals. They can lead to health problems such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility issues and cancer.

Yes the hot shower, you're absorbing it through your skin. You brush your teeth the unfiltered water is going in your gums. When you take an average shower your body can take up to 6 ounces of chlorine and other chemicals that are in the water. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the top causes of outbreaks in public water systems include:

  • Copper

  • Salmonella

  • Hepatitis A

  • E. coli

  • Norovirus

Any of these contaminants and heavy metals can lead to health problems such as kidney and respiratory issues, reproductive challenges, and cancer. A polluted water supply can also be harmful to your skin and hair. Yes that's right, YOUR HAIR IS AT RISK!

God it's scary stuff? I never even stopped to consider it until I listened to an episode of the Adam Carolla show and they drilled down on all the side effects of unfiltered water. And naturally I only assumed that I was fine just buying bottled water, not thinking about all the other forms of water my body regularly engages with on a daily basis. You've all seen me showering on my INSTA reels right?

I've been doing some reading up on the importance of Water Filtration on the FloWater website. I'm currently looking at installing a water filtration system for the entire house.

Here are a couple of companies that are operating in the U.K that I am looking into and I'll update this blog accordingly if I decide to pull the trigger on one.

Harvey Water Softeners - Their vision is to have softened water in every home in the UK. Harvey says everyone “would benefit from a water softener, if it makes sense for one person, then it makes sense for everybody. Water is used every day and softened water does any job better than hard water."

Reverse Osmosis World - Prices range from £150 - £580.

Aquathin - Aquathin's Whole Home Filtration system offers the very best in water quality protecting your family by removal of Sediments, organic contaminants and eliminating waterborne bacteria and skin irritants, giving you the most luxurious bathing, and showering water available.
