What to Wear for Any Job Interview in 2020 | Men's Style Advice
What to wear for an Interview x Carl Thompson.JPG

In the latest Vlog I went into what you should wear for interviews. Should I wear a suit for an interview you might be thinking? Would I look like too much of  a square.

Should I wear a suit for an interview?

Yes, if you're unsure on what to wear. Are you concerned on over dressing? Then dress ins a suit and at least you can rest assured that you made an effort.

If you are going for a corporate job then absolutely wear a suit.

If you are going for a job in a creative agency then you can go smart/casual. I'd still wear a suit but you don't worry so much on wearing a tie.

What suit colour should I wear to a job interview?

Great question. The suit colours I think would befitting a job interview would be dark navy or dark grey. Anything in light grey is too casual. If you're going for a corporate job then you can wear black obviously but it's a rather dull first impression.

If you're going for a non-corporate job you might think that a brown check or a Grey POW suit would be a fitting choice. However, bear in mind that you might already be going casual without a tie. Any other formal downgrades will be risky.

No matter the season, don't wear light grey. It's a job interview, not a wedding.

What kind of shirt should I wear to a job interview?

It has to be a classic white shirt. Nothing with any frills or monograms on the cuff. A double cuff with cufflink is a safe bet. However, a button cuff will also be fine. I wouldn't wear your turn back cocktail cuff that you had styled on the latest Bond movie. It's too casual for an interview. You're not here to impress anyone with dandyism.

If you're after a crisp white shirt then look no further at my own Hawkins & Shepherd collection. You can also go for a shirt with a thin blue stripe, but nothing that will distract the interviewer. You don't want to look like you're on route to the Henley regatta.

What kind of tie should I wear?

I would go plain and classic. Nothing with a picture of a Goldfish, nothing gawky or bilious. A simple polka dot tie, a plain dark colour. Also make sure you are going for an appropriate width. Something around 2.5 - 3 inches. Anything wider is too seventies, anything thinner is too Mod.

What shoes should I wear to an interview?

Shiny and clean. I would always go Black or Dark Brown. Never light brown. Go for black if in doubt.

What watch should I wear?

Nothing too flashy. There's no point whipping out the haymaker that your wife got you for an anniversary. Yes it's classy but suggests you're doing just fine for money so don't need the gig.

Rotary watches offer great accessible watches for under £200. You can also get some Daniel Wellington watches for under £200 which have a clean face. You almost want to be as sterile as possible when it comes to accessories.

What trousers should I wear?

I would go for a woollen pair of trousers. If you go for jeans it suggests laziness. That you might have just come from the pub. Find a nice pair of tailored trousers. Even if they're plain black ones. The most important aspect of all these garments is that they're neutral, fitted without being utterly joyless.
