David Beckham Classic: Revisited and Reviewed

Today I want to talk about the beauty that is the David Beckham Classic. I recently revisited this fragrance after a long time and really wanted to explore it in detail. I did pen an article about the Classic Collection and what indeed 'makes a classic' in a previous post here.

But let's get more into the weeds with this one, here are my thoughts.

Classic by David Beckham is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. Classic was launched in 2013. The nose behind this fragrance is Aurélien Guichard. Top notes are Lime, Gin and Galbanum; middle notes are Cypress, Mint and Nutmeg; base notes are Amber, Texas Cedar and Vetiver.

The bottle:

A minimalist label on a cylindrical bottle. The sides are perforated for better grip. The glass ensures you can see the gold liquid, and that speaks luxury. The silver metallic cap gives it a nice aesthetic and I'm pleased there is no plasticky feel to any of it.

The Opening:

It has a very strident gambit. If it was a chess move it would be the Sicilian Defence, aggressive, causing one to counter with tactical play. There is a citrusy aura, mixed with a tinge of Summer sports. The Gin, the Lime, if you've ever been to Henman Hill at Wimbledon, you'll know what I mean. I'm surprised at how bossy this scent is. For an entry level price point, it avoids all cliches.

The settle down:

A surge of mint comes straight through the middle. Like a slow motion punch from a Matrix film. I love this mint, it has a purpose and it entwines nicely with the lime and the gin. I'm transported to the bleachers with my Wife at Wimbledon a few years back. A young black American girl, Coco. Cori Dionne "Coco" Gauff. There were a lot of Americans there that day, screaming let's go Coco.

Wimbledon is a sardine can filled with drunk sardines. The Sipsmith Gin Cocktails are devoured by the vultures keen to get that Summer buzz, that perfect photo. Oversized sunglasses, skinny linen suits, isn't everyone just full of themselves. I thought we were here for tennis.

The Drydown:

I return some time later, and I'm swamped in Vetiver. Like I've fallen asleep in the bath, and the bathtub is a field of lemongrass. What is going on? This scent takes you a journey, but it forgets to tell you where you're going, or how you got there. And none of that is a bad thing. I enjoyed returning to Beckham's Classic. It has some unexpected twists, it has a cerebral quality. A bit of an out of body experience in truth. Who knew.
