LIFE HACKS ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SNEAKERS BY THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THEM

I was lucky enough to get gifted a pair of sneakers by KHV CONCEPT. And following discussions around how to care for them, I soon got the understanding that I was getting the inside track. Who better to learn how to look after sneakers than from those that make them. Introducing Dimitar Kehayov, the founder of KHV CONCEPT.

Please give us a little background on you

I recently founded the contemporary luxury footwear brand, KHV CONCEPT following several years of experience in the industry and being a true shoe addict my entire life. My passion lies in crafting essential footwear characterized by impeccable quality and craftsmanship. To me, a well-crafted shoe is more than just an accessory; it serves as a form of self-expression and tells a unique story. The inception of KHV CONCEPT stems from my desire to contribute to the growing sneaker culture, infusing it with a touch of elegance and class. While street style dominates the industry, I envisioned a product that caters to those who appreciate the sneaker culture but seek a timeless, refined, and classy option—one that effortlessly complements both trousers and relaxed attire. I create slimmer looking, smarter shapes that me and the team in Italy develop specifically for each style and its story of why we are creating it. The whole design and development process is to create the perfect pair for individuals who consistently embody a polished and sophisticated appearance, and we love to contribute to that.

Why is caring for footwear so important?

Quality footwear is crucial to completing any outfit. Often overlooked, it makes a substantial difference. People pay attention to shoes, and wearing a high-quality, clean, and well-maintained pair consistently leaves a positive impression.

What are the secrets to keeping trainers clean and in good condition?

I believe the most effective way to maintain shoes in a good condition is to rotate between a few pairs, allowing each shoe to "breathe." Weather conditions play a significant role in cleanliness. During rainy weather, it's advisable to avoid suede or textile shoes and instead prioritize leather pairs for better durability.

How about cleaning the white mid-soles, any tips?

Alright, this is something I haven't shared publicly before, but I've been doing it for many years, and it works like magic. If someone damages a pair, please don't hold me responsible. For white soles, use nail polish remover with acetone, saturate a cotton pad with it, and delicately clean only the sole (particularly effective on rubber soles). Exercise caution, as acetone can harm other materials like leather or textiles. However, it's the most effective way to give them a thorough cleaning occasionally, leaving them looking brand new.

What about suede trainers. What advice would you give?

The foremost consideration is opting for water and stain-repellent suede if available. At KHV, we consistently use this type of suede because it significantly simplifies shoe maintenance. Our shoes for instance, do not leave stains if they get wet and subsequently dry. A slightly damp wipe (not overly wet) easily cleans them. If this specific suede option isn't available, using a spray designed for suede/nubuck proves effective. Whether it's stain and water repellent or a spray, periodic use of a suede brush enhances the velvety texture, providing a refreshing touch to the shoes.

Should I ever need to get my trainers cleaned professionally?

The necessity for professional cleaning depends largely on the materials of the footwear. Textures like satin, lace, or delicate fabrics can be challenging to clean at home. Generally, for leather shoes, professional cleaning is not necessary unless there's a specific need, such as covering scratch marks or addressing significant wear and tear.

How should I keep my trainers in home? Do I need to keep them in a box?

I often receive numerous questions about shoe care and maintenance from my friends, given my reputation as a shoe enthusiast. My advice is consistent: store your shoes in the original box or, at the very least, in the dust bags they come with. Keeping the shoes from heat sources and direct sunlight is crucial. While this routine may seem excessive at first, once you become accustomed to it, it seamlessly becomes a regular part of caring for your footwear, without feeling like an extra effort for each pair.

What tips do you have for maintaining the shape and structure of different types of shoes over time?

At KHV Concept, we place significant emphasis on preserving the shape and structure of our shoes to avoid the undesirable appearance of stretched and loose shoes. Our approach involves using thicker suede for maintaining the natural shape, implementing a highly intricate construction process, and incorporating various reinforcements. For shoes that may not be engineered in this manner, I recommend utilizing the paper that typically comes inside the shoe to keep it well-structured when not in use. Alternatively, shoe trees are an excellent option for maintaining the shape of the footwear.

Could you provide some tips for extending the lifespan of shoes?

Absolutely, the product life cycle is frequently overlooked in sustainability discussions, yet extending it significantly contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. My primary focus is on delivering the highest quality to ensure that our shoes not only last a long time but are practically indestructible. A crucial tip I can offer is to prioritize caring for the shoes—keeping them clean, storing them correctly, and maintaining a rotation with a few pairs. These practices undoubtedly play a vital role in enhancing the lifespan of the product, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

How do you educate people about the importance of proper shoe care when they purchase footwear?

Through conversations with individuals who express care for their shoes but find them wearing out quickly, I've come to understand that not everyone shares the same passion for footwear. While for some, it may be just a pair of shoes, for me, it's quite the opposite. I am dedicated to providing the best possible quality, making it my mission to ensure that the shoes last as long as possible. For instance, when customers purchase shoes from us, we offer a dedicated page on our website that provides care instructions and details about the materials used. We actively encourage individuals with any questions about shoe care to reach out to us for guidance and clarification.

What impact can well-maintained shoes have on an individual's confidence and self-esteem?

Shoes are a noticeable element of someone's attire and often draw attention. People frequently glance down, making shoes a significant focal point. Having a well maintained, high-quality pair of shoes is likely to garner compliments and create a positive impression. I've experienced this multiple times, and I must admit, it feels nice to receive such positive recognition.

What are some common mistakes people make when it comes to shoe maintenance, and how can these be avoided?

The most prevalent mistake is attempting to wash shoes by hand or in a washing machine, which is unequivocally the worst thing one can do to a good pair of shoes. The intricate manufacturing process involves various materials such as paper, glue, and finishes, making shoes susceptible to damage during washing. Risks include sole detachment from the upper, colour migration, and leather cracking and shrinking. While some shoes, like sports shoes, may be washable, it's essential to check specific care instructions before attempting any washing.
