THE EVEREST HARRINGTON – ON MY WISHLIST

Whether it’s Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace, Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair, or James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause the Harrington jacket has been a classic staple that has sheathed iconic lead actors for decades. On a recent trip down to Grey Flannel on Chiltern Street, I got to see first-hand a very exciting interpretation of this garment which they have coined the ‘Everest Harrington’.

I tried it on, it immediately went into my top 10 Wishlist with a bullet. I was so enamoured I wanted to know everything about this jacket so I reached out to the store manager for more information. Please find below an E-Interview and some imagery. For any further information, pricings or appointments please enquire through the Grey Flannel website.

1. Tell us about the inspiration behind the Harrington?

Although this does not apply to all men, we have found in some cases there are men who don’t necessarily like to “dress up” and wince at the notion of figuring out what to wear when attending a formal event.

This is when the Everest Harrington comes into the play, our “tailored" response to a casual garment which over the years has had many iterations and has been seen worn by the likes of Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra and Daniel Craig to name a few making the golfing jacket an iconic and more "approachable" style.

We substituted the traditional cotton cloth of a Harrington with fine English Barathea cloth and cleaned up the shape of the jacket giving it a more sleek and less rounded silhouette with details that nod to our tailoring heritage.

2. Why Barathea and what is so special about the fabric?

For the Harrington we’ve used a dress black barathea, which is a fine English cloth that is a fabric traditionally used for uniforms and evening suits, it’s got a really smooth and luxurious handle! We call it dress black because although the cloth is an ink like navy, the cloth can look more black under certain lighting than an actual black cloth, which in turn can take on shades of green, brown and grey. Overall giving the cloth a more refined and thought out aesthetic.

3. How would you recommend styling this jacket?

That’s the best thing about the Everest, it can be worn however, formal - thanks to the fabric or casual due to the style of the jacket.

But here’s some ideas:
Formal - Shirt, Knitted Tie, Grey Flannel Trousers with a pair of oxfords.
Casual - Knitted Polo Shirt, Stone Chinos with a pair of suede desert boots.

4. What are the options made to measure? Can we do something different with the linings?

Yes of course, if you weren’t keen on the muted paisley lining, we can switch that out for something else through our made-to-measure program.

5. How quickly would you be able to make one for a customer that needed a specific size?

Usually it takes around 4-6 weeks, although we do offer the Everest Harrington Ready-to-Wear from size 48-58, can covers a lot of ground.

6. It comes with a hat also? What is special about the hat?

The popularity of the Everest Harrington has encouraged us to create a full fit using Barathea, the first step was creating a matching cap made in collaboration with Tom Smarte London and soon to come a pair of trousers to match - we are still in the process finalising the designs on whether to go completely formal or continue the formula of taking something casual and “Luxing” it up. Maybe some cargos pockets?
