Veranda Grand Baie in Mauritius Re-opens in July 2023

Today I wanted to give you a look inside the Veranda Grand Baie in Mauritius, the last and final leg of my tour of Veranda Resorts. And what a beauty it was.

This exclusive cocoon is an ode to Mauritian history, where the elaborate codes of colonial interior design, from white walls to carved woodwork meet the simple charm of creole homes and their corrugated metal sheet roofs.

But there's a secret I'm going to let you in on. The Veranda Grand Baie has had ongoing refurbishments that has prevented many people from enjoying this mini slice of heaven. However, good news campers, the resort will be reopening in July 2023,  and Tuula and I were lucky enough to have a sneak preview and give you an update.

The hotel in the lively village of Grand Bay is redesigned with Mauritian culture and lifestyle at its core which it has dubbed ‘Creole Chic’. Which sounds like a great name for a paint you'd pick up from B&Q, even though you were only there shopping for cable ties and artificial ivy decoration panels.

Take me to the beach

Out on the beach, under traditional kiosks, deck chairs invite you to comfortably settle for a day of farniente. Veranda Grand Baie epitomises the finest pleasures of Mauritian island life in the lively village of Grand Baie. Inspired by typical creole guesthouses, this hotel and its private beach provide guests with a peaceful haven!

Veranda Grand Baie, through its creole roots, revisits the Creole chic concept by offering a range of immersive local experiences. (I've put some discounts and intel down at the footer, but don't scroll down to the bottom straight away, because my one-paragraph review is just around the corner).

This is the ideal place to immerse yourself in local life or yacht out to the beautiful islands of the north.

The hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. They spoilt us all along the way. The staff are amazing, friendly, helpful and yet never over bearing. The hotel sits on a small lagoon - you can swim but not much - but the beautiful Trou Aux Biches beach is a 20-25 min walk around the coast. In our opinion the finest beach on the island.

From the press release because I couldn't word it better myself

Veranda Grand Baie will combine the typical ambiance of island guesthouses and their tropical gardens with a touch of refinement, inviting guests to relive the warmth and intimacy of past times.

Contemporary lines and organic forms inspired by the property’s coastal environment shape the harmonious indoor-outdoor flow of the rooms, restaurants and living spaces. Its 95 rooms open onto lush tropical gardens with terraces and balconies facing the coconut grove.

Tell me about the restaurants

Guests will be able to enjoy an authentic and interactive culinary experience at the main restaurant, the Food Comptoir, with a breath-taking view of the lagoon. There, guests will be invited to gather around a table to share and enjoy local Mauritian products. An à la carte menu at the beach restaurant offers only local and regional seafood, in line with Rogers Hospitality’s Now for Tomorrow sustainability programme for the promotion of a circular economy.

The beach bar will undoubtedly be the place to sip an aperitif as the sun sets over the bay dotted with sailing boats and catamarans. Here, the local music and the sound of the mixologist’s shaker will resonate as the infinity pool and the sea in the background light up with orange and purple reflections. Local snacks and tapas - samosas, banana chips, moolkoos - will be featured to complete the gustatory picture, Mauritian style.

Whereabouts is it located?

Located in the very heart of Grand Bay village, guests can enjoy its array of restaurants, bars, markets and shops, while enjoying the tranquillity of this unique place. It is a haven for those who are looking for an immersive holiday and want to enjoy the natural and cosmopolitan beauty of this part of the island.

In addition to its environment and its Creole-inspired cuisine, Veranda Grand Baie aims to be an inclusive and sustainable establishment. An example is the in-room beauty and care products collection selected with respect for the environment and made from natural ingredients. Veranda Grand Baie will also offer guided tours for those who want to explore the streets of Grand Bay village and its surroundings. The tours will be conducted by a passionate guide to meet small local producers.

But Carl what about the design and sustainability pledges?

The decor of Veranda Grand Baie’s 95 rooms reflects the Mauritian style, with natural materials such as rattan, cotton, linen, light-coloured woods and decorative elements meticulously handcrafted by Mauritian artisans, giving a unique and authentic look to the decoration. Delicate wallpapers offer several views of Mauritius from the Moris des DOMINOTIERS collection. The clean look of these pieces gives the space a spacious and bright feel, with mostly natural light!

Sustainability was also considered when designing the rooms: among others measures is the fitting of sinks and showers which will be equipped with aerators to reduce water consumption, and the use of LED light bulbs and energy savers. The hotel will also be equipped with photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters. One of the objectives for 2023 will also be to obtain the Green Key label, previously obtained by the group’s other hotels.

Ok now the discounts

To celebrate the opening, the 4-star hotel is offering a 50% discount on all stays from July until October 2023 and 40%, on all stays from November 2023 onwards. Rates in July 2023 for 2 adults and 2 children under 12, including breakfast, start from just £112/night.

Surrounded by coconut trees, the hotel’s pool has been completely redesigned to become an infinity pool, giving the impression that the surface of the water merges with the horizon, offering a panoramic view of the azure lagoon of Grand Bay.
