Dressing Sharp on a Budget: Smart Ways to Save Money on Fashion

I know we all want the brand new shiny thing that will make us happy for five minutes. But it's not sustainable, from a money stand point I mean. Yes climate and fast fashion, we've all seen the images on the internet. But what about that image of my bank balance? How do I save money on clothes but still look like an advert for Hugo Boss? I hear you ask.

1. Shop Sales and Clearance: Look for discounted items, clearance racks, and sales events at your favourite stores. If you're London based then the best place is The Music Room on South Molton Street. The missus swears by it. I swear by it to, especially when I see the bank statement at the end of the month.

2. Use Coupons and Promo Codes: Use coupons, promo codes, and cashback offers when shopping online or in-store. Also ask if they have any deals on at the minute. Sometimes they have deals on for their loyalty customers and can make allowances for you.

3. Buy Off-Season: Purchase clothes at the end of the season when prices are lower, even if you can't wear them right away. My Brother always goes Christmas shopping in January. He's crazy right? Nope. As you get older you appreciate that we live in a consumerist world and Christmas will always come around.

4. Thrift and Second-hand Stores: Explore thrift shops, consignment stores, and online resale platforms for affordable, gently used clothing. Basically give Harrods a miss on this one.

5. Quality over Quantity: Invest in high-quality basics and essentials that will last longer, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Only the best for the captain's table. If you're unsure if the item is high quality, ask at the till 'will this last me for the rest of my days.' Obviously don't ask that in ZARA, you'll get laughed out the shop.

6. DIY and Repurpose: Learn basic sewing skills to repair and alter clothing. You can also repurpose old items into something new. Alternatively buy your mum lunch and bring her a stack of clothes. She'll be grateful that you thought of her, especially if you haven't spoken for months, what with all the press trips you've been on.

7. Set a Budget: Establish a clothing budget and stick to it to avoid impulse purchases. Alternatively don't leave the house or go online. I find these simple disciplines work wonders for my balance sheet.

8. Compare Prices: Compare prices at different stores and online retailers to find the best deals. Ohh maybe I should start a blog called Compare the Cardigan .COM . Or something like that.

9. Avoid Trends: Avoid buying trendy items that may quickly go out of style; opt for classic pieces instead. Especially fan merch. Those are the worst and you can never bring yourself to part with them. Does anyone actually like Metallica anyway?

10. Clothing Swaps: Organise clothing swaps with friends or family to exchange items you no longer need. You know I never get anyone else's hand-me-downs. Constantly giving stuff away, rarely getting anything back the other way. I should get new friends and family members.

11. Minimalism: Embrace a minimalist wardrobe with fewer versatile pieces. You'll never convince a woman to do this. Or me for that matter. Look a man can never have enough cravats ok? It's just genetics, or science or both.

12. Buy in Bulk: Purchase basics like socks and underwear in bulk to save money over time. Of course make sure you're realistic with the sizing when it comes to underpants. It's ok telling your Tinder profile you're a 32" waist, but it only creates more headaches and return trips to John lewis if you're just lying to yourself.

13. Online Shopping: Be cautious when shopping online, as it's easy to overspend. Stick to your shopping list. They say don't go food shopping when you're hungry, same for shopping with clothes. Never fire up the laptop in the nude.

Remember that saving money on clothing often requires patience and planning. Prioritise your needs over wants and make conscious choices to build a budget-friendly wardrobe.
