Men's Jewellery Trend: Pearl Necklaces | What’s on the Mood board

Today I'm going to share some research notes on a growing trend in the men's jewellery sector, pearl necklaces. Soon I'll be starting some new designs for phase two of my own jewellery line, Dion Dreyes

I have some design ideas in mind that I'll hope to share with you in due course. The research and conversations back and forth with my supplier finessing what is and what isn't possible is always the most enjoyable part of any process. Of course for purpose of this article I will also be looking at my contemporaries for inspiration,

Here are some brands that I have my eye on that are also doing some excellent work in that space.

Other brands doing it

Tateossian have released the "Poseidon Necklace", this collection of men's pearl necklaces features 4mm natural pearls combined with a delicate sterling silver chain. It vacillates between minimalism and part of an eclectic bundle-look as it can be worn alone or layered for a contemporary aesthetic. Comes in white or black pearls depending on your preference.

Serge Denim have a plethora of pearl trinkets, rings and necklaces for you to choose from. I've highlighted the Gold Sherbet Necklace. Consisting of a mix of shell pearls, colourful beads and a 14kt gold plated sterling silver curb chain. I love the ambition and the ornate vibe this chain gives off. It's young, it's elegant, it also has that famous 'what's that?' appeal about it. You have to ask and you have to touch.

Etsy. It may sound like low hanging fruit, but there is a cornucopia of men's pearl necklaces on Etsy. Personally I think the over-ornate ones cheapen the overall look. I'll be looking to try and evoke some of the spirit of my favourite actors. Al Pacino's Vincent Hanna from Heat for example. Someone that likes to wear jewellery but doesn't want to make a fuss of it. Someone that likes to make an effort, without the style being the main focus of his character. I've picked one example from Etsy, as it looks simple, exotic and has been reviewed really well. I've taken note of the packaging feedback too. The pearl necklace has 8-9mm freshwater pearls with sterling silver components and has been knotted by hand You can select a length of your choice, with or without a 2 inch extender.

Dower & Hall (Via Wolf and Badger). I've mined the collection of independent brands listed on the Wolf and Badger site. This freshwater pearl strand necklace by Dower & Hall spoke to me.  Made in their London studio, this 6-7mm mixed peacock, dove grey and white cultured freshwater pearl strand necklace is perfect for day or night. The necklace is finished with their signature sterling silver beaten loop and t-bar catch.

Lastly, and this one is going up the food ladder in terms of pricing, but the Stephen Webster England Made Me Switchblade pendant. 18ct yellow gold with white mother of pearl inlay 2.18ct and the other side is engraved on a 30 inch chain. Something different for the inner London gangster in you.

I've also heard Thomas Sabo are going to bring out some pieces at some point soon. I'll be keeping an eye on them. If you have any ideas including design elements you'd like to see incorporated in my latest collection please DM me on Instagram
