Rabanne 1 Million Black Eau de Parfum Review: An Icon Returns with a Darker Side

There are certain fragrances that instantly transport you back to a particular period in your life, and 1 Million is undoubtedly one of them. Few men's fragrances have become quite as recognisable, or nostalgic, as that original gold bottle.

Now, Rabanne 1 Million Black Eau de Parfum takes that familiar DNA somewhere darker, richer and more grown up. Tropical freshness meets creamy vanilla and deep ebony woods, creating a fragrance that still has the confidence and mass appeal of 1 Million, but feels much more suited to where my fragrance tastes are today. Harrods describes the new composition as balancing radiant freshness with an after-dark character, and that's a pretty accurate description.

The Scent

Top: Tropical Freshness

The opening is immediately recognisable as something from the 1 Million universe, but there's a new energy to it. Roasted pineapple, blood orange and cardamom create a juicy tropical freshness with just enough spice to stop it becoming overly sweet. It's bright, attention-grabbing and incredibly easy to like.

Heart: Maxi Vanilla

Vanilla becomes the star as the fragrance develops. It's creamy, rich and addictive, complemented by coconut and aromatic clary sage. There's a warmth here that immediately pushes 1 Million Black towards evening territory. It retains that seductive sweetness associated with 1 Million, but there's greater depth and maturity this time around.

Base: Ebony Woods

The base is where everything becomes darker. Ebony woods are joined by patchouli and tonka bean, grounding the sweeter elements and creating a warm, woody trail designed to linger. It's smooth, masculine and made for after dark.

The Nostalgia of 1 Million

For me, this is perhaps the most interesting thing about 1 Million Black. The original 1 Million was a gateway fragrance for an entire generation. For many men, it was probably one of the first fragrances that made them realise just how much a scent could become part of their identity. And that's why I don't think 1 Million Black should only be considered by someone relatively new to fragrance.

I've spent years collecting and discovering incredible fragrances from niche perfumers and some of the world's most prestigious houses, yet there's still something brilliant about returning to a name like 1 Million. Fragrance doesn't always need to be obscure or difficult to appreciate to be good. Sometimes nostalgia is part of the experience.

A Gateway into the World of Fragrance

I also think 1 Million Black is a brilliant stepping stone into more serious fragrance collecting. Someone might start with 1 Million because it's recognisable, accessible and instantly appealing. Then you begin noticing individual notes. You discover that you love vanilla, woods, leather, vetiver or oud. Suddenly you're exploring different concentrations, perfumers and niche houses.

Before you know it, you've got an entire fragrance cabinet. We've all got to start somewhere.

But equally, if you're already a fragrance connoisseur with dozens of bottles, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having something like this sitting amongst them. A great collection should be about fragrances you genuinely enjoy wearing, not simply how rare or expensive they are.

When to Wear 1 Million Black

This is definitely one I'd reach for later in the day.

The tropical opening gives it enough freshness to stop it becoming too heavy, but the creamy vanilla and ebony woods really come alive as the evening progresses.

Dinner, drinks, date nights and nights out all feel like natural territory. I also think it'll be particularly good once temperatures begin dropping and we move into autumn and winter.
